Yup, you heard me right, Google Chrome donates to charity its tabs and they want us to join them. Google just recently launched its Chrome for a Cause service that will enable Google Chrome users to donate their tabs. From December 15-19, 2010, every tab we open on Chrome allows the Chrome community to donate to selected charities to support five worthy causes depending on the total number of tabs that everyone opened up to $1,000,000.
Everyone’s total tabs will determine a charitable donation made on behalf of the Chrome community, up to one million dollars. Here’s what your tabs can do:
- 10 tabs = 1 tree planted
- 10 tabs = 1 book published and donated
- 25 tabs = 1 vaccination treatment provided
- 100 tabs = 1 square foot of shelter built
- 200 tabs = 1 person’s clean water for a year
To start donating your tabs, just install Chrome for a Cause Chrome extension and that’s it! A button will appear in your browser indicating the total number tabs you’ve open so far.
At the end of each day, the extension will ask you to submit your tabs. You can select which charity to donate your tabs to.
Of course Google defines its Terms and Conditions to avoid abusing the system:
The Charitable Donation
Google has set a maximum contribution of $1,000,000 associated with the Google Chrome for a Cause extension. You agree Google may change this maximum contribution at its sole discretion.
Limit on tabs submittedGoogle Chrome for a Cause sets a daily maximum for the number of tabs you may submit, presently equal to 250 tabs per day. You are also limited to accruing one tab per second towards your daily maximum. Share this good deed with your friends so Santa Claus will give you gifts this Christmas!
